Steamer trunks were manufactured in the late 1800s to be used by sea travellers as luggage on the long voyage. They were made with flat tops so that they could either be stacked neatly on top of one another in the storage hold or could be slid under the berth.
These steamer trunks were made from a variety of materials such as oak slats or, more commonly, leather or canvas. Their durability is illustrated by the fact that although many of them were made over a hundred years ago they still look extremely attractive. They also respond well to restoration with a tired old trunk looking better than ever after a professional job has been done on it.
A trunk would not look out of place in just about every home such is the range and the unassuming quality they can bring to a room.
